Eric P. Mandat + John McCowen

Tuesday, October 25, 20228:00 pm

For more than 40 years, clarinetist/composer Eric Mandat has been on the leading edge of clarinet extended techniques explorations, touring frequently as a soloist, and in small group contexts as an improviser. This performance will feature the NYC premieres of Infinite Edges, his work for clarinet with electronics, and movements from his 2013 work for solo clarinet, Chiral Symmetries.

John McCowen will perform two new solo works that showcase the contrabass clarinet as a polyphonic instrument. Through finessing the sound spectrum of this instrument, a language based in the natural harmonics of a cylinder has developed. Put simply, the music features multiple, independent moving lines from one acoustic sound source.

“However austere [McCowen’s] approach may seem, the results teem with the sonic equivalent of microscopic life viewed on a slide.” —The New Yorker
